Monthly Oiling (The Secret to Long Life)

Oil keeps wood from drying out, cracking and turning dull. Oil your pieces once a month, or whenever they look pale and thirsty.

Start with a clean, dry pieceMake sure the wood is completely dry before oiling.
Apply a thin coatRub food-grade mineral oil or coconut oil with a soft cloth on all sides, along the grain.
Let it soak inLeave it for a few hours or overnight.
Wipe off the extraBuff away any excess oil so the surface is not sticky.
i
Tip: Avoid large amounts of cooking oils like mustard or sunflower — they can turn sticky and smell over time.

Removing Stains & Smells

  • Turmeric / masala stains: sprinkle coarse salt, scrub with half a lemon, rinse and dry.
  • Garlic, onion or fish smell: rub with a paste of baking soda and water, leave 5 minutes, rinse and dry.
  • Dull or rough surface: lightly sand with fine sandpaper (around 220 grit), wipe the dust and oil it.
5

Storage & Placement

  • Keep pieces away from the stove, direct sunlight and room heaters.
  • Avoid damp, closed cabinets — open shelves or ventilated drawers are best.
  • Spice racks, knife stands and holders can stay on the counter, away from the sink splash zone.
  • Do not store wet items on or inside wooden pieces.
